A very popular model, Shubra Aiyappa has been in cinema for a decade, but has done only a handful of movies so far, which is mostly down to the fact that she is “too tall”. Ramana Avatara, which releases in theatres on May 10, is only her third film in Kannada and one that she took up without details about the character. She was sold the minute director Vikas Pampapathi told her that he wanted her to play a village belle.

“Normally, when I am approached for film roles, my height is an issue, but otherwise, the offers are for very classy, aristocratic kind of characters. So, when the team of Ramana Avatara said they wanted me as a girl from a village, I did not even ask anything further about the character and said yes, because I want people to see me like that. I am really excited,” Shubra said at the film’s trailer launch on April 27.

The film’s been in the making for a while, so, Shubra says that she is waiting eagerly to see herself in this never-before-seen avatar onscreen. “The team, led by Vikas, was very clear about how my character was to look, talk and walk, and helped me prepare for the role,” says Shubra, about playing Poorni, the girl who ends up breaking Rama’s (Rishi) heart. The film, she adds, is cool, intelligent and edgy, while also conveying a good message.

Ramana Avatara, which has music by Judah Sandhy, also stars Pranitha Subhash, Anirudh Acharya and Arun Sagar, among others. The film was initially in a 3-way box office competition with other Kannada films – Grey Games and Choo Mantar. But as of April 26, Sharan’s horror comedy Choo Mantar has moved out of the race.
