Regional content is increasingly finding takers across nooks and corners of the country. With the advent of the digital medium, the idea of a regional actor is gradually disappearing and viewers are getting to appreciate talent, newer stories regardless of language or region. Shyam Singha Roy, the reincarnation drama starring Nani, Sai Pallavi, Krithi Shetty, and Madonna Sebastian, was a major commercial success at the theatres and is proving its worth in the digital space after its OTT release on Netflix.
Shyam Singha Roy released across all four South Indian languages on Netflix, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam and is receiving a unanimous response from audiences ever since it had its OTT premiere. The numbers too are now proving it. As per a weekly report released by Netflix, the period drama was the most watched film on Netflix in India in the previous week (January 17-23). More surprisingly, in the non-english category across the globe, the film was the third-most viewed title.
As a story, Shyam Singha Roy is about reincarnation, love and is a theme that enjoys widespread appeal with many audiences. Audiences have particularly applauded the film's second hour where Nani plays the title role, a social reformer who gradually finds himself falling in love with a devadasi named Rosie. Nani and Sai Pallavi's performances are being praised all over and the delicate treatment of a rather familiar story by filmmaker Rahul Sankrityan seems to have worked big time.
Produced by Venkat Boyanapalli of Niharika Entertainment, the film, which initially hit theatres on December 24, had music by Mickey J Meyer, was cinematographed by Sanu John Verghese and edited by Navin Nooli. Avinash Kolla was on board as the art director.
