Sidlingu 2 director Vijaya Prasad ditches trademark adult comedy dialogues; here’s why

Kannada director Vijaya Prasad has earned himself a reputation as a filmmaker whose movies are loaded with just as much philosophical thought as adult comedy. The overdose of sex jokes also meant that most of them were A-rated, but did not work at the box office. After films like Neerdose, Petromax and the two-part Thotapuri, Vijaya Prasad has decided to switch tracks and is ditching his ‘trademark’ style of filmmaking.

With his next, Sidlingu 2, the sequel to his earlier Sidlingu, starring Loose Mada Yogi in the lead, he returns to safer terrain. The film is set to release in theatres on February 14, ahead of which, the filmmaker has been addressing the media to spread the word that Sidlingu 2 is unlike most of his other films. Why has he chosen to give up on the double-meaning content, though?

“That style of writing, with a lot of adult comedy, appealed only to a section of the audience. But the socially-relevant messages embedded in my films are relevant for the audience that does not appreciate double meaning dialogues. Since my writing leaned heavily in that direction, they would not welcome my films. My intention is to get my content across to a larger section of the audience and the best way to do that is to change the approach to my writing. Sidlingu 2 is the first step in that direction,” says the filmmaker.

Vijaya Prasad adds that Sidlingu 2 has its fair share of fun and frolic, but it is clean humour that will work for all audiences. This time around, Yogi is paired with Sonu Gowda. The film, says Vijaya Prasad is special to him because the original Sidlingu was made to give visual representation to his thoughts and the sequel, which comes 12 years later is an extension to it, taking into account the life experiences that the character has had in this time period.
