Hong-Kong filmmaker John Woo's latest revenge thriller, Silent Night, might have a predictable plot, yet, it's undeniably one of Woo's finest and among the most deliriously cinematic arts of 2023. This movie is a powerful testament to the idea that how a story is told far outweighs the story itself. Despite having an average achivement at the box office, Indian action lovers can find Silent Night quite interesting as it's set to make digital debut on Lionsgate Play and OTTplay Premium this June.
Starring Joel Kinnaman in the lead, Silent Night, is releasing on Lionsgate Play and OTTplay Premium, on June 20, 2025. The movie also features Scott Mescudi, Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno in pivotal roles.
Christmas Eves are a time filled with joy and celebration across the world. But for one father, it becomes a nightmare. While being with his young son, he is likely enjoying the festive atmosphere, when something terrible happened. Two different groups of criminals, fighting amongst themselves, begin shooting at each other. In a tragic moment, the innocent boy gets caught in the middle of the dangerous gunfire. The tragedy soon strikes in the father's life when his son loses his life in the crossfire.
The father, who also gets hit during the chaos, survives the physical injury, but it comes at a great cost as he loses his ability to speak. The wound silences his voice, leaving him unable to express his grief and rage verbally.
But even without a voice, the father prepares with his burning desire for vengeance inside him. After he gets healed from his physical injury, the father begins a difficult journey. He sets out to find the killers, and punish every single person responsible for his son's death, no matter where the path might take him forward.
For the unversed, filmmaker John Woo's returned to Hollywood after two decades with Silent Night in 2023. His last movie was Paycheck (2003), and according to John, he thought that he would never get a real good script after this. While talking to The Ringer back in 2023, the Hong-Kong filmmaker stated that he always wanted to make something smaller, unfortunately, him being an established director, smaller scripts never came to him.
He has been offered for several Chinese movies all these years, but never a good gripping English thriller from the West. Hence, after 20 years, when he was offered Silent Night, the project got him excited instantly because the movie has very less dialogues, which John Woo's felt quite challenging.
