Kollywood actor Silambarasan aka Simbu’s latest film Eeswaran is gearing up for its OTT release on June 12 on Disney+ Hotstar. The streamer made the surprise announcement on Thursday evening through its social media handles.
The movie, which released in theatres in January, is directed by Suseenthiran of Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai and Pandiya Naadu fame. The film revolves around a farmer named Periyasamy and his large family. A quarter century ago, an astrologer had predicted the death of Periyasamy’s wife, which came true, and now anther prediction about a death in the family has them disturbed. This gets further worrying when a convict seeking revenge against Periyasamy is released. Only, Eeswaran, Periyasamy’s caretaker, stands in the way of fate.
The Tamil film also makes use of the pandemic lockdown in the plot of the movie, which began shooting in September last year. Simbu had reportedly completed dubbing his portions in a single day.
The movie also courted controversies ahead of its release. The Animal Welfare Board had objected to the first look poster of Eeswaran that showed Simbu’s character with a snake wrapped around his neck. The petitioners claimed that the snake was heavily sedated but the film’s team denied this, saying that it was just a plastic snake. The poster was later removed.
The makers of the film were also eyeing a simultaneous OTT and theatrical release in January, signing a deal with an OTT platform OlyFlix for countries outside India. However, the Tamil Nadu Theatres Owners Association opposed this citing piracy issues and the makers were forced to hold off their plans for OTT release.
