One of the Kannada films that released on March 9 in theatres and has been receiving widely positive reviews from critics and audiences is the Dheekshith Shetty-led sci-fi flick Blink. Directed by debutant Srinidhi Shetty, with a relatively new cast and crew, Blink has got a limited release, which the team is hoping to improve based on the positive word of mouth they’ve received, including from Kannada filmmaker Simple Suni, who watched the film over the weekend.
Speaking to the media, Suni said that he’d decided to watch Blink based on the good reviews he’d heard. While he liked the film, Suni was appalled that the occupancy in theatres was low. “I am not sure if people will take offence to what I say, but had Blink been made in Malayalam, Kannada audiences would have queued up by now to watch it. Since it has been made in Kannada, Kannada audiences are shunning it. If you look at the ticket trend on aggregator sites, you will understand what I mean,” he said. The filmmaker was hinting at the occupancy of Malayalam films like Manjummel Boys and Premalu in Bengaluru.
The filmmaker added that the question of whether one will like the film or not is secondary, but that the fact that a new team has tried to do something different should be encouraged. “People keep saying that there are no good films in Kannada and then they may be confused by celeb endorsements for every other film hitting theatres.Blink is the kind of film that should have better occupancy,” said Suni, adding that the 10-20 shows that the team currently has in multiplexes should grow organically to ten-fold the current trend. “Even if you don’t watch my film Ondu Sarala Prema Kathe, it’s fine, please support Blink,” the filmmaker added.
Blink follows a youngster called Apurva, who experiments with time travel in his quest to get answers to his questions about his father's disappearance several years ago. The film also stars Chaithra J Achar, Vajradheer Jain, Gopalkrishna Deshpande and Suresh Angalli, among others.
