SP Charan is one among the rare second generation industry kids, fully qualified and equipped to take the legacy of their illustrious parents forward. Though the void of someone as legendary as SP Balasubrahmanyam is impossible to fill, he has accepted that responsibility with a touch of humility and grace.

He was in the news recently, crooning for Oh Sita, Hey Rama, the first single from Dulquer Salman, Mrunal Thakur, Rashmika Mandanna starrer Sita Ramam. In a recent interaction, the actor-singer-producer opened up on his experience singing for the Vishal Chandrasekhar composition lyricised by Anantha Sriram.

Charan calls Oh Sita, Hey Rama, a mesmerising, timeless and beautiful song, and is grateful about the opportunity to lend his voice for the Tamil and Telugu versions. When he had listened to the final product, he was quite confident it would be a big hit. However, he was totally surprised by how it was lapped up by music buffs.

The musician was in praise of the song's programming and its ambience, applauding how Vishal Chandrasekhar handled the string section. “I liked the melody and the Pallavi in it. It was a difficult song but I wanted to try it with a beautiful tempo. It was fantastic to work with Vishal.”

Incidentally, it’s his first-ever song for Sita Ramam’s lead star Dulquer. Once Charan knew that he was crooning for a Dulquer film, he was also hoping to sing the Tamil version too - which turned out to be a reality. “I wish I had sung the Malayalam version too.  I admire Dulquer’s talent greatly and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to lend my voice for a great performer,” he shared.

In the view of Charan, Vishal’s greatest strength is his ability to put the vocalist at ease. The fact that Vishal is a singer too and an animal-lover helped them forge a strong rapport. Charan believes melodies suits him best and that they have an ageless appeal. However, that doesn’t stop him from exploring newer horizons.

The singer remains well aware of the ongoing trends in the industry and is great friends with popular music directors like Anirudh Ravichander, Thaman, Devi Sri Prasad and Vishal Chandrashekhar. As a listener though, he prefers the music from the retro-era and enjoys the numbers composed, sung by his father and his contemporaries the most.

Though singing wasn’t his first love, it was his father’s performances that channelised the musician in him. Charan had also sung for other films like Panchatantram and Akhanda in the recent past. Meanwhile, Sita Ramam that also stars Sumanth, Prakash Raj, Gautham Menon, Tharun Bhascker, Bhoomika Chawla, Rukmini Vijay Kumar, Sachin Khedekar, Murali Sharma, Vennela Kishore, hits screens on August 5.
