Sci-fi thriller 'Aporia' starring Judy Greer announces release date
Popular character actor Judy Greer essays the lead role in the upcoming sci-fi film Aporia. She plays the role of a woman whose husband was killed by a drunk driver. But when she gains access to a weapon that can shoot anyone in the past, she decides to avenge her husband's death. By going back in time and killing the man responsible, she prevents her spouse’s death but inadvertently triggers a chain of events that lead to dire consequences. Edi Gathegi, who was recently cast as Mr Terrific in Superman: Legacy, essays the role of the husband. Aporia is set to release in theatres on August 11.
Nicolas Cage to star in assasin comedy 'The Retirement Plan'
Hollywood veteran Nicholas Cage, who was last seen in the action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, has been cast as the lead in another action comedy. Titled The Retirement Plan, Cage plays the role of Matt, a retired assassin turned beach bum. The plot revolves around how his estranged daughter and granddaughter seek his help as they are being hunted down by a dangerous criminal organisation. Twilight star Ashley Greene plays the role of the daughter, with Sons of Anarchy and Hellboy star Ron Perlman and Watchmen’s Jackie Earle Haley playing pivotal roles. The Retirement Plan will release in theatres on August 25, 2023.
'Nadikar Thilakam' starring Tovino Thomas begins filming
Minnal Murali star Tovino Thomas is set to headline the upcoming Malayalam comedy film Nadikar Thilakam. The Jean Paul Lal directorial tells the story of an actor battling depression, addiction, and a dysfunctional family. The film also stars Bhavana, Soubin Shahir, Dhyan Sreenivasan, Indrans, Veena Nandakumar, Lal, and Shine Tom Chacko in pivotal roles. Lead star Tovino Thomas recently joined the cast for the shoot, after wrapping the epic period film Ajayante Randam Moshanam.
HBO dominates Emmy nominations
The American studio HBO has dominated the Emmy nominations yet again this year with three of its flagship TV shows taking in more nominations than any of its competitors. The network amassed a whopping 127 nominations across all of its programming. Succession leads the list with an incredible 27 nominations including best drama, Best Actress for Sarah Snook and a record three Best Actor nominations for Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong. Several of the supporting actors also received nominations for the outgoing show. The hit video game adaptation The Last of Us garnered 24 nominations including Best Drama, Best Actor for Pedro Pascal, and Best Actress for Bella Ramsey. The dark comedy series The White Lotus is at third with 23 nominations. Other HBO originals such as House of the Dragon and Barry also received nominations for Best Drama and Best Comedy respectively.
Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso continues to impress with 21 nominations. Better Call Saul, Beef, The Bear, The Crown, Andor, Yellowjackets, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Wednesday, Only Murders in the Building, and Jury Duty are some of the other major TV shows to receive Emmy nominations this year. The winners will be announced on September 9th and 10th during the two-night event
Anthony Carrigan cast as Metamorpho in ‘Superman: Legacy’
The casting announcements for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy have to be the highlight of this week, and this time it is for the iconic Superman character Metamorpho. The role will be played by Barry actor Anthony Carrigan, who has previously played the DC characters Victor Zsasz in the TV series Gotham and Kyle Nimbus aka Mist in CW’s The Flash TV series. The news comes after Gunn announced that Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Nathan Fillion have been cast as Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Green Lantern.
Early reactions to 'Gran Turismo' film adaptation are positive
Sony and PlayStation Studios have ambitious plans to adapt several of their properties to live-action. The Uncharted film starring Tom Holland was released last year, while The Last of Us TV series was released by HBO, and garnered critical acclaim, including 24 Emmy nominations. The Twisted Metal TV series is scheduled to release on July 27, while live-action adaptations of award-winning games such as God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon Zero Dawn are in development. Meanwhile, the next major video game adaptation is the upcoming feature film Gran Turismo.
The Neil Blomkamp directorial is a coming-of-age story tied in with the real-life tale of teenager Jann Mardenborough, an avid Gran Turismo player. The plot revolves around how Mardenborough won a competition called the GT Academy to become a real racer for Team Nissan. Archie Madekwe essays the lead role as Mardenborough, with David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Djimon Hounsou also playing prominent roles. Geri Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice the former Spice Girl and wife of Christian Horner, Team Principal of the Red Bull Formula One team, also plays a pivotal role in the film. Gran Turismo is scheduled to release on August 11, 2023. Critics have labelled it a “solid adaptation”, and praised it for its references to the source material, while some have called it the “greatest video game movie ever”.
