Sometimes I go 'Bhaisaab aap mere paas kyu aaye ho': Vidya Balan on the kind of roles she gets offered

Vidya Balan is riding high on the love and appreciation that she has been receiving for her latest release Jalsa. Co-starring Shefali Shah, Jalsa, which released on Amazon Prime Video, has Vidya playing the character of a journalist - Maya Menon. The actress's performance has been gathering praises from the audience and the critics alike. 

In a recent interaction with the Indian Express, Vidya was asked that she's always been the hero of almost all of her movies, whereas her Jalsa co-star Shefali had to wait for a long time to get substantial parts in films. Responding to whether getting a start as the leading lady helps or determines the kind of roles that get offered to actresses, Vidya quipped by saying, "Not at all" and added that people can be quite shameless and will come to you with just about everything. "Sometimes I go, ‘bhaisaab but aap mere paas kyu aaye ho (Brother, why have you come to me)? Hero ka role de rahe ho (Will you give me the hero’s role)? They just have no qualms and want to take a chance."

The actress further added that she's not saying that she will only play the most important part, but that she needs something that she can dig her teeth into. Vidya also mentioned that waiting for good projects to come her way is something she doesn't consider to be a struggle. 

Speaking about how making her debut with an author-backed role made a difference in her career, the Sherni actress said that she feels firtunate to gave gotten the kind of work that she's done. She said that with time, the roles that she gets have only become better and varied. 

Vidya further told the publication that when she started off, many people pointed out that she's the only one doing the kind of parts that she did but Vidya feels that she was just lucky to be at the right place at the right time. However the actress feels that things have changed these days as more female actors are playing stronger parts in projects. Giving an exaple of her Jalsa co-star, she said, "Look at Shefali, she is probably the busiest actor after she crossed 40, and with the right kind of work on her plate."
