The popular Indian reality show Roadies returned for its 18th season last month. For the first time in the show’s history, Sonu Sood has taken on the mantle of host. The actor recently opened up about the inhibitions he had about his first time as the show’s host.

In conversation with IANS, Sood talked about how he wondered about whether or not he would be able to carry on the show’s ‘legacy’ when he was approached by the makers for the first time. “I thought it's not my cup of tea” he said.

He had doubts about whether or not he would be able to speak with the contestants as well. But when he started to think about the show’s concept, he realised how it was his duty as host to keep the ‘soul’ of the show alive and repackage it as an ‘inspiring and positive’ journey. The actor also revealed that a lot of viewers had approached him and revealed that they watched the show together with their families as well, which Sood said was ‘positive and inspiring’.

After spending more than a month shooting in South Africa, Sood was able to connect well with both the old and new contestants, and it felt like a ‘family reunion’ to the host. Opening up about the contestants this season, Sood talked about how they got “the feel of real life”. Spending time in tough conditions across locations, isolated and away from family had helped them come out of the show as different individuals than they went in. Sood also said that the contestants themselves felt that they had grown as human beings. “I think that was the real win for us," he added.

Roadies can be streamed on Voot.
