It's been more than a year since Sooryavanshi is ready for a theatrical release. The film directed by Rohit Shetty features Akshay Kumar in the titular role and Katrina Kaif as the female lead. Sadly, after announcing the release date thrice, the film hasn't witnessed the light of the day yet. Sooryavanshi marks the first outing of Akshay and Katrina with Rohit on the big screen. The shooting of the film took place in 2019 and the film was first set to release on March 24, 2020.
A glimpse of Akshay Kumar's character as Veer Sooryavanshi was witnessed in the climax of Simmba. The actor plays the role of chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad. He is hunting down terrorists who are planning an attack on Mumbai. Sooryavanshi joins the forces with DCP Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) and Inspector Sangram Bhalerao aka Simmba to fight against the deadly group of terrorists.
Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif who were last seen together in Farah Khan's Tees Maar Khan reunited for Sooryavanshi after 10 long years. The actors are among the favourite onscreen couples in Bollywood and have worked together in several films namely Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Namastey London, Welcome, Singh Is Kinng, Blue and De Dana Dan.
Rohit Shetty is planning on turning his cop movies into a franchise. After Singham and Simmba, now Sooryavanshi makes for a Cop Universe which is likely to expand further.
Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif extensively shot for Sooryavanshi in Bangkok. In India, they shot in Mumbai, Goa and Hyderabad.
Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif shot for a romantic song in Sooryavanshi which is the reprised version of Mohra song Tip Tip Barsa Paani. The song originally featured Akshay and Raveena Tandon.
Javed Jaffrey, Gulshan Grover, Abhimanyu Singh, Jackie Shroff, Sikander Kher, Nikitin Dheer, Vivan Bhatena, Kumud Mishra, Mrunal Jain also star in Sooryavanshi.
Reliance Entertainment, Rohit Shetty Picturez, Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and Akshay's Cape of Good Films have co-produced Sooryavanshi.
After announcing the release date on March 24, 2020, the makers of Sooryavanshi had to postpone indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this year, the makers had announced the release date as April 30, 2021. However, due to the second wave of COVID-19, the film once again has been postponed indefinitely. Now, makers are likely to announce the release date during the Diwali weekend this year.
Earlier during an interaction with Bombay Times, when Akshay was asked about an update on Sooryavanshi's release, the actor had said, "There are only two people who can answer your question. One is God and the other person is Rohit Shetty. Even I want to see Sooryavanshi on the big screen. As for the audience and my fans, I’m really grateful that despite such a long wait, they are asking about updates on its release."
