The surge of COVID-19 cases in Kerala along with the government announcing weekend lockdowns for the next two weeks have prompted the makers of Soubin Shahir’s Kallan D’Souza to postpone the release of the film, which was set to hit theatres on January 21.

In a statement, the makers said that the safety of the audience is equally important as the success of the movie and that’s one of the reasons they have decided to push the release of the family-drama, directed by debutant Jithu K Jayan.

“If more severe restrictions are announced by the government, it would hinder the film reaching the maximum audience. We apologise to those who have been waiting for the movie to release,” said the film’s team.

The shoot of the movie, which has Soubin, Dileesh Pothan, Surabhi Lakshmi and Hareesh Kanaran as part of the cast, had concluded by the end of 2019. The team was planning for an April 2020 release, when the pandemic lockdown was announced in March that year.

In a recent interview with OTTplay, Jithu said, “There’s a limit to which we can hold on to the movie because there’s a producer who has invested a lot of money into this. That’s why we had decided for a January 21 release.”

The film, scripted by Sajeer Baba, has Soubin reprising his character D’Souza from Dulquer Salmaan’s 2015 film Charlie. Jithu, however, clarified that the name of the character is the only connection to the Martin Prakkat movie. “The film is about two thieves based in Kochi, who form a friendship with the wife of a brash and headstrong police officer, played by Dileesh Pothan,” said the filmmaker.

Earlier this month, the makers of Dulquer’s Salute, Tovino Thomas’ Naradan and Nivin Pauly’s Thuramukham had announced that they were postponing the theatrical releases of the film, owing to the rise in COVID-19 cases in the State.
