8/12 unfolds on the historic event on the very date in 1930. The administrative centre in India, the Writer’s Building in Kolkata was also the administrative capital during the British Raj. On a usual day with usual proceedings, three men tore through the tidy order of the day, only to be etched forever in history. The three revolutionaries Binoy, Badal and Dinesh appeared into the light of the day from behind shadows, donning European raiments, and opened fire on Col NS Simpson, the then IG Prison in Calcutta.
Simpson, who was infamous for the cruel treatment he meted out to the political prisoners, died on the spot by the bullets. The three freedom fighters were tried for murder and anti-government activities at the Alipore Jail and given the death sentence by hanging. Only Dinesh survived.
