Sourav Ganguly biopic casting update: Who will portray former Indian cricketer's parents alongside Rajkummar Rao?

One of the most versatile actors, Rajkummar Rao, is confirmed to play the lead role in the upcoming biopic of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, the film has been garnering a lot of attention. Amid this, a new report shared a casting update about the cricketer's parents and the BCCI President. 

Who will play Sourav Ganguly's parents in his biopic?

As per a Calcutta Times report, Sourav Ganguly's parents will be portrayed by two of the most versatile actors in the industry. His mother's role is likely to be played by Bengali actress Aparajita Adhya, and Boman Irani is likely to play Chandi Ganguly, Sourav’s father. Meanwhile, Gajraj Rao may portray former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya. 

The report also claimed that Rajkummar is expected to spend a few days at Ganguly’s home to observe and internalise the personality behind the cricketing icon closely. The film is slated to go on floors from March 16.

In an earlier chat with NDTV, Rajkummar Rao confirmed that he is playing the biopic of the former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly. "Now that Dada (Sourav Ganguly) has already said it, let me also make it official - yes, I am playing him in his biopic," he said. 

As a Kolkata native affectionately called 'Dada,' Sourav Ganguly’s story demands authenticity in Bengali. Rajkummar Rao, fluent in the language, acknowledges his wife Patralekhaa’s role in shaping his command over it. He said, "I am nervous... It's a huge responsibility, but it's going to be a lot of fun."

Will shooting take place at Eden Gardens and Lord’s?

According to Pinkvilla, the makers are prioritising historical accuracy by filming at the very grounds that defined Ganguly’s legacy. Lord’s, often regarded as the Mecca of Cricket, is etched in memory for his 2002 NatWest Series celebration and his memorable Test debut hundred in 1996. 

Meanwhile, Eden Gardens stands as both his home turf and the stage for the landmark 2001 Test win over Australia. Reportedly, the team aims to recreate these milestone moments in real locations to capture their true emotional weight.
