Everything that happens in and around the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes headlines and there is no way something will go unnoticed on the internet. While the studio now focuses on its new motto of quality over quantity and is working on the calendar likewise, the latest report has an update to offer about a legal battle the studio was fighting. The latest report says that Marvel has settled the last of five copyright lawsuits over Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. But do we know what these lawsuits were about in the first place?
The biggest news for the past many hours has been that Marvel has now settled the copyright lawsuits for Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. But not many of us were aware of exactly what these lawsuits were. Who was the studio fighting with and for how long? We will simplify everything for you in this write-up.
What Exactly Happened?
So in 2021, Stan Lee’s (the father of Marvel comics) brother Larry Lieber, as well as the estates of Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, and Don Rico, filed a series of copyright termination notices against the studio. Larry has co-created Iron Man, Thor, and other Marvel characters The intent of the group was to own the rights to their respective characters.
The studio later filed a countersuit alleging that Larry and the team were not eligible to own the rights to these characters because they worked on them on hire.
What Is The Current Status?
It turns out that after three years, all the lawsuits have been dissolved. As per The Wrap, the final of the five lawsuits has been amicably resolved by the studio and the group that filed them in the first place. They are now expecting a dismissal within 45 days. Marvel representative Molly Lens of O’Melveny and attorney Marc Toberoff, who represents Steve Ditko’s brother, Patrick, have sent a letter regarding the same to Judge Louis A. Kaplan.
Talking about the same, Marc said, “The parties reached an amicable resolution of this interesting case.” Marvel can now breathe a sigh of relief in this legal battle.
