All roads lead to Squid Game on Netflix as the show is now making waves for numerous reasons, chief among them being the much-anticipated second season. Squid Game Season 2 is generating significant buzz, set to premiere on the streaming giant this December after a long wait. Just as excitement builds for the new season, it appears Netflix aims to expand the franchise in all possible directions. Recent reports reveal that the studio is planning an English-language adaptation, to be headlined by none other than the visionary filmmaker David Fincher.
Yes, you read that right. There has been speculation for some time now about David Fincher’s involvement in something related to Squid Game. Initially, it was rumored that he might develop an English-language film inspired by the series, but new reports confirm that it will, in fact, be a full-fledged series. Fincher, who has a partnership deal with Netflix, is one of the platform’s top talents, and this project would further solidify their collaboration.
According to Deadline, this will be the first English-language scripted series based on Squid Game. While there is already Squid Game: The Challenge, which is unscripted and moving into its second season, Fincher’s series would offer a new scripted take on the original concept. While specifics are still under wraps, this extension of the Squid Game universe could potentially bring the game into an American setting, though this is speculative until further confirmation from either Fincher or Netflix.
Set three years after the first season, Squid Game Season 2 follows Gi-hun as he re-enters the brutal game. According to the official synopsis, "Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, embarking on another life-or-death competition with new participants aiming to win the 45.6 billion won prize."
The latest teaser was packed with Squid Game Easter eggs. We see the Salesman, played by Gong Yoo, waking up in his apartment, getting ready, and leaving for work. He goes to the subway, where he first met Gi-hun in Season 1, and stops another individual, asking if they want to play the game. The teaser then shows him presenting the iconic blue and red Ddakji tiles, hinting at familiar elements that fans can expect to see in the new season.
Squid Game Season 2 is set to release on Netflix on December 26, 2024. Stay tuned to OTTplay for updates on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
