The international smash hit Squid Game on Netflix is almost over, and it's leaving viewers wanting more. The third season teaser for Hwang Dong-hyuk's critically acclaimed South Korean series has just dropped, and it looks like the harsh survival drama will wrap up in a dramatic, intense, and high-stakes fashion. All episodes of the final season will be available for streaming simultaneously beginning on June 27, 2025. Even though Netflix hasn't officially announced anything, rumours have it that there will be six episodes.
Season 3 takes place immediately following the shocking events of Season 2, when an unsuccessful uprising left viewers on an excruciating cliffhanger, and returns them to the bizarre realm of children's games where their lives are literally on the line. The teaser begins with a disturbing shot of Lee Jung-jae's character, Seong Gi-hun, or Player 456, in a coffin from the Squid Game. Fans and fellow survivors are relieved to see that he is still alive, though.
Returning to the players' quarters, Gi-hun is resolute in his mission to expose the evil game from within. The official Netflix summary states that this season "thrusts Gi-hun back into the brutal heart of the games." Gi-hun is plagued by the memory of his closest comrade, Jung-bae, who was killed by the game's enigmatic enforcer, the Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun. Unbelievably, it has come to light that the Front Man joined the insurrection while pretending to be Player 001.
As a visual nod to the red X and blue O player vote mechanism introduced in Season 2, the teaser reveals a terrifying new game with a gigantic gumball machine that dispenses red and blue balls. More psychological warfare is on the horizon, as each ball seems to dictate the player's next challenge. At the end of the clip, a baby's wail echoes around the picture, creating an unsettling atmosphere that suggests more sinister and intimate discoveries are on the way.
A number of familiar faces, like detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon [watch Midnight]) and the fearsome Front Man, as well as several players from earlier rounds, like Myung-gi (Player 333), Dae-ho (Player 388), Hyun-ju (Player 120), and many more, will be returning. Returning as well is the enigmatic pink guard No-eul.
Since its December 26, 2024, premiere, Season 2 has broken all records for most viewers in a single week, surpassing even Season 1—the show's all-time best performer on Netflix. This last chapter follows Gi-hun's journey from Season 2, when he re-entered the games to destroy them, to Season 3, whose shocking climax set the scenario for this.
Although Season 3 concludes Gi-hun's adventure, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has dropped hints about spinoffs that could extend the Squid Game universe. These could be prequels centred around the Front Man or the Recruiter (Gong Yoo [watch Guardian: The Lonely and Great God]) or even storylines that delve into what transpired between seasons.
Hwang and Kim Ji-yeon serve as executive producers for Squid Game on Firstman Studio. The third season is building to a thrilling finale, full of strategy, suspense, and the emotional stakes that made the show famous.
Even though the games are still in progress, the finish line is finally visible.
