Sr. Documentary trailer: Robert Downey Jr pays a poignant tribute to dad Robery Downey Sr.

The documentary film is part a tribute to Robert Downey Sr. (who passed away in July of 2021) and his artistic legacy but most importantly, it is a foray into unravelling the mind of a father and the role he plays in the shaping of his children.

Hollywood superstar Robert Downey Jr. has spoken multiple times of his father's eccentricities and how they shaped him as an individual. Born to parents who were merrily submerged in the American counterculture of the 1960s, Downey Jr. grew up with a natural penchant for the cinematic arts and its ancillary vibrancy. His father, Robert Downey Sr., was one among the few popular and discerning underground moviemakers of the time and as it turns out, the two share more than just the name: aside from the fact that the Iron Man star went on to make his own mark in the movie business, he also inherited his father's maverick nature which manifested in a rather dichotomous manner. While Bob Downey Jr. stood out in the early years of his career as one of the most alluring and unconventional talents, he also found himself caught in the clutches of drug abuse and legal troubles.

But it is also quite true that he has managed more than well to exit those trenches and find peace and success eventually. In hindsight, as he often reflects on his growing-up years in interviews, things seem endearingly bizarre to him but with a new-found sense of objectivity, he is able to recount it all with a graceful smile on his face. His relationship with his father, Downey Sr., is likely to have evolved as well and reached a stage where it warrants a deeper understanding of its workings. And in this very pursuit, Robert Downey Jr. has backed a documentary film that is part a tribute to Robert Downey Sr. (who passed away in July of 2021) and his artistic legacy but most importantly, it is a foray into unravelling the mind of a father and the role he plays in the shaping of his children.

Titled 'Sr.', the Netflix original docu. picture is slated to release on December 2 and features an intimate journey of the Downeys into their quirky pasts and a promising, tranquil future. The trailer of the same was released on November 14.

"We never know how much time we have with each other," says the Sherlock Holmes actor as he tries to put in words the inspiration behind conceiving and starring in the documentary. In the trailer, we see him be the doting son and father and bridge the gap between two generations while trying to make sense of the dysfunction that existed in his own childhood. Sr. is also a portrait of Robert Downey Sr.'s filmmaking career which produced cult hits like Putney Swope, Pound, and Greaser's Palace and inspired filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson and Jim Jarmusch.

Chris Smith, known for making documentaries like American Movie, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, and The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann, directs 'Sr.'.
