It has been over three weeks since Malayalam cinema’s legend Sreenivasan passed away. One of the most talented artistes, Sreenivasan, was noted for his impeccable writing along with his remarkable acting skills. Still hailed for his political satire, Sandhesam, Sreenivasan had also penned a heart-warming movie Katha Parayumpol, which featured one of the most touching climaxes. Recently, veteran director Sathyan Anthikad revealed that Sreenivasan took 15 days to pen the climax speech of Mammootty’s blockbuster movie that spawned remakes, starring Rajinikanth and Shah Rukh Khan.
Veteran Malayalam director Sathyan Anthikad shared his memories and anecdotes about his close friend and long-time collaborator Sreenivasan on Facebook. Katha Parayumpol revolves around barber Balan, who finds himself in a spot after it is revealed that he was childhood friends with superstar Ashok Raj (Mammootty). The villagers believe he was lying but in the climax, Ashok Raj talks about his dear friend in a touching speech that proves Balan was saying the truth.
The Hridayapoorvam director recounted the instance when Sreenivasan spoke about the speech in Katha Parayumpol climax and that it took him around 15 days to write it.
“He kept on writing and rewriting that speech, evne changing the structure. Even he himself felt moved after reading the draft and he felt that it would work. He handed over the speech for Mammootty to read, who was also found wiping his eyes later on,” Sathyan Anthikad said in the post, highlighting the effort that Sreenivasan took to convey the emotions.
The 2007 Malayalam film Katha Parayumpol became a success and was remade into Tamil and Hindi with Rajinikanth in Kuselan and Shah Rukh Khan in Billu Barber. But unlike the Malayalam film, the remakes did not fare well at the box office. Notably, Sreenivasan and Rajinikanth were classmates at the Madras Film Institute.
