Srijit Mukherji is back with what he is best at, a thriller. After a break of a couple of years, he has his Puja release, Dawshom Awbotaar, with Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu U Sengupta, Jaya Ahsan, Anirban Bhattacharya, and others. In a recent chat with OTTplay, the director explained how the story came to his mind.

According to Srijit, the idea of Dawshom came to him during Baishe Srabon’s sequel, Dwitiyo Purush, and that too, after Prosenjit Chatterjee asked about his Baishe Srabon’s character, Probir Roychowdhury. The director explained, “After Dwitiyo Purush was made, Bumbada (Prosenjit) called and asked why Probir Roychowdhury is not there in Dwitiyo Purush. Now, Probir Roychowdhury cannot exist in a sequel of Baishe Srabon as he blew off his head by the end of the first film. He can only come in a prequel, if any. That’s how I started thinking of Dawshom.”

Later, producer Srikant Mohta insisted he planned something for Puja. “Srikant said, ‘Let’s do something big,’ and I thought this would be the right time to make the first cop universe film in Bengal. I like the idea of a cop universe film. I enjoy watching them. I found it exciting to bring these two worlds of Probir Roychowdhury and Bijoy Poddar together,” the director said.

Dawshom Awbotaar is a prequel of Baishe Srabon and Vinci Da and features Probir Roychowdhury and Bijoy Podder (played by Anirban in Vinci Da) together. Why did Srijit think of bringing Bijoy Podder with Probir Roychowdhury? He explained, “During Vinci Da, I noticed the incredible popularity of Poddar. While Ritwick Chakraborty and Rudranil Ghosh share the longest screen time, Bijoy Poddar’s character receives love. The number of memes that were generated with Poddar’s dialogues was incredible. That is why I thought of bringing two iconic films together.”
