Srijit Mukherji’s Sherdil: A Pilibhit Saga will hit the theatre on June 24. On Monday, the director and the lead actor Pankaj Tripathi, who plays Gangaram, came to Kolkata for promotions of the film that also features Sayani Gupta and Neeraj Kabi. Sherdil delves into the man-animal conflict in a region and corruption at the government offices.

While meeting the press, the director said, “Sherdil: The Philbit Saga is an extremely special film for me. It is based on bizarre yet real facts. Never had a movie been made on such a concept. I am honoured to work with talented actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Neeraj Kabi and Sayani Gupta. So finally, after five years the dream comes true and we bring you the story of Gangaram on the big screen and hope that the audience will love this movie.”

Pankaj, who is Bengal’s jamaibabu (his wife Mridula is Bengali), has expressed his joy in visiting Kolkata. He said that it is always special for him to visit the City of Joy. He further added that it was a must for them to visit Kolkata this time since the director is from Kolkata. He hoped that the audience would like his character. “Gangaram treads into the forest to get himself killed by a tiger so that his family and fellow villagers can get the government compensation. His will to sacrifice himself makes him a great man,” the actor said.

In an interview, he also said that a character is bigger than the actor in a film. “I can never plan a sacrifice so great,” he said. While elaborating on their shooting days in the forest, he said we would like to go back to the forest again. He also mentioned that he and Srijit both are fond of jungles. “We used to enter the jungle at 5.30 am and used to plan according to the movement of the sunlight,” he said.
