Stolen is Karan Tejpal's first feature film as a director, and Prime Video unveiled the trailer for the investigative criminal thriller. The film, which stars Abhishek Banerjee, Harish Khanna, Mia Maelzer, Sahidur Rahaman, and Shubham Vardhan, will be available to stream starting June 4, 2025.
Stolen was written by Tejpal, Gaurav Dhingra, and Swapnil Salkar. It has the support of Jungle Book Studio and was produced by Gaurav Dhingra. Noteworthy filmmakers such as Anurag Kashyap (No Smoking), Kiran Rao, Nikkhil Advani (D-Day), and Vikramaditya Motwane (Trapped) serve as executive producers for the film.
An unsettling scene—a mother, Jhumpa (Mia Maelzer [Beyond the Clouds]), slumbers on a desolate railway platform as her infant daughter is kidnapped—sets the tone in the trailer. Then, for Jhumpa's aid, brothers Gautam (Abhishek Banerjee) and Raman (Shubham Vardhan) embark on a perilous and unknown quest to find the kid. The intertwining of justice and desperation is brought to light as the journey swiftly transforms into a survival fight.
According to Tejpal, Stolen is an honest and gritty tale of two very different cultures that collide in unexpected ways. He added that the film appears to be a tight action thriller at first glance, but the film's emotional impact builds subtly and stays with viewers long after the credits roll. The filmmaker stated that Abhishek, Mia, and Shubham deliver stellar performances that propel the film along, set against a harsh, rocky backdrop. For Tejpal, the journey thus far has been tremendously fulfilling, with a truly remarkable and motivating reaction from festivals throughout the world. He is even more committed to his creative vision now that outstanding filmmakers like Kiran Rao, Anurag Kashyap, Nikkhil Advani, and Vikramaditya Motwane have backed it.
Abhishek shared that Stolen is India's response to genre-driven, unfiltered cinema. He has aspired to be behind the wheel, like his character Gautam, ever since he heard the narrative. The actor said that Tejpal has one of the most innovative and fascinating brains he has ever met. Abhishek said that the filmmaker is not going anywhere, and he's excited for others to discover Tejpal's true potential. The actor added that they really need more producers like Gaurav Dhingra, who is deeply committed to making outstanding films.
"A profound journey" was the way Mia put it. She said that Tejpal's vision and sensitivity as a director created a space where authenticity could truly flourish, guiding them to bring out the rawness and depth the story demands. Jumping into the role of Jhumpa was an emotional and intellectual struggle that tested her limits.
Shubham expressed that the first time he read the script of Stolen, he couldn't shake it off. Acting out Raman's role tested him subtly but surely—in every important respect. The actor said that the character carries an intense emotional current, and it was challenging and gratifying to portray that. Thanks to Tejpal's unwavering faith in his performers and his precise vision, they were able to go deeply into their work.
With its successful festival run under its belt, Stolen is about to make its streaming debut throughout the world.
