To set the record straight, Matt and Ross Duffer have officially confirmed the return of Stranger Things for its fifth and final season in 2025. Actually, it might be sooner than anticipated.
Ross Duffer told the audience at the SCAD TVfest, where the brothers were awarded the Variety Showrunners Award, that they are concentrating on visual effects sequences right now, which started back in January. All is well and surprisingly, they are actually ahead of plan.
No word yet on whether all eight episodes will be released at once or if, similar to Season 4, they will be split into two drops. Matt Duffer added that they shall see. This year, he can promise that it will happen. He thinks they are dead on.
Matt Duffer conceded when asked about the Duffers' description of the last season at the recent "Next on Netflix" press event as eight blockbuster films. It seemed like a compelling statement.
Despite his admiration for blockbuster films and elaborate special effects, he emphasised that, ultimately, the success of a show depends on its characters. They were film guys growing up, but he loves television because they get to do massive theatrical special effects and spend a lot of time with the characters. He thinks good television succeeds when it aims to make them feel emotionally immersed in the plot.
Caleb McLaughlin, who portrays Lucas on Stranger Things, was present at the SCADshow theatre to present the Duffers with the Variety award. While filming the series, the two producers marvelled at how much the actor and the other younger actors had matured.
Matt Duffer remarked that they are like family now. That part of the series has been really unique. Perhaps because of their sheer numbers, each one of them has grown into an admirable human being. The worst-case scenario is that they ruin a child's life by making them famous. Simply said, he couldn't be prouder of their maturation into adulthood.
As Stranger Things winds down, Ross Duffer mentioned that nostalgia is beginning to set in. The final week of filming, and more especially the day they began to wrap their core cast, was the most difficult for him and his team. It was a year of filming where they were completely immersed in every moment. On the other hand, they began to think back on everything and the paths they had taken during the last week, especially on the final day. It really shook them all up. He predicts that the show's final release will reverberate with them, prompting them to change their editing approach.
The plot involving these people is complete, according to Matt Duffer. In other words, the story is finally winding down. No, there won't be a Steve/Dustin spinoff. They hope that once they complete telling this story, they will leave it and go on to sharing other stories. And he hopes there are fresh, endearing characters to meet.
Ross Duffer asked, bringing up the fact that Stranger Things originally began as an homage to the storytelling that inspired them, that they could take these loves, and in this case, their childhood and their friends and do something completely unique and original. It wasn't the initial goal or strategy, but they found it so exciting they may use it as a guide.
