The world is currently obsessed with Stree 2, a film that has turned into a box office bonanza for the makers, who are probably celebrating its outstanding run every single day for the past 10 days. This movie is the fifth installment in the horror franchise that began with the first Stree in 2018, and also includes Bhediya, Roohi, and Munjya. But Stree 2 is about more than just one movie—it's part of a larger narrative. Bhediya is woven into the story, Janaa hints at a possible vampire outbreak in Delhi (We see you, Ayushmann Khurrana), and a new villain, Sarkata, takes center stage. But who exactly is Sarkata? Many fans are still puzzled.
If you haven’t seen Stree 2, this is your cue to book your tickets right away! Starring Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi in leading roles, the movie revolves around the village uniting to fight Sarkata this time. Co-writer Niren Bhatt recently spoke about this mysterious villain, his inspiration in creating him, and who Sarkata could be. Read on to learn more.
In a conversation with PTI, Bhatt addressed the most common criticism of the movie: either it contains too much humor or not enough horror. He explained that every ghost in Maddock's Supernatural Universe represents an evil from society. "Sarkata is the most warped form of patriarchy. Stree symbolizes matriarchy—she is not a witch. Bhediya is the protector of the forests. We have designed these characters with a specific purpose in mind. We’re not just talking about random spirits or hocus pocus," Bhatt explained.
When discussing his inspiration for creating Sarkata in Stree 2 with Bollywood Hungama, Niren Bhatt revealed that the idea stemmed from the destroyed idols in the cave from the first film, where murals depicted that Stree once had a lover while she was involved in sex work. The mural lacked a head, but it was unclear whether the head was broken or intentionally missing. From this idea, they created a monster with a missing head.
Niren Bhatt was asked whether Sarkata could be Stree’s lover in Stree 2. Bhatt was quick to clarify that Sarkata cannot be Stree’s lover. There’s no way he would come back from the dead and become a threat to the woman he once loved and the people she now protects. However, in an intriguing twist, Bhatt proposed a theory: Sarkata could be the man who killed Stree and her lover, thereby becoming the embodiment of patriarchy.
