Studio Ghibli is undoubtedly one of the most popular names in the genre of animated features. The animation studio has time and again gifted world cinema with some of the best animated movies including Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro. These movies have also helped cement the studio’s reputation as a world class moviemaker. Known for its hypnotic excursions, the madcap Indiana Jones-style adventures and feminist ethos, most of the movies produced by the studio has been well received by critics as well as audiences.
Studio Ghibli is not high on volume though. The studio has only 21 features under their name, but the number of movies is not what Ghibli is known for. They are known for producing highly complex and emotional movies with perfection. And here, we have made a list of 6 Studio Ghibli movies that you can watch now on Netflix.
My Neighbour Totoro
One of the studio's most iconic films is My Neighbour Totoro. It is a tale of two girls in the countryside who move to a new house to be closer to their hospitalised mother. There they meet a giant, cuddly cat named Totoro, who happens to be a spirit. When we look deeper, the movie appears to be a message of hope and optimism explored through fantasy in times of hardship.
Spirited Away
This Studio Ghibli animated feature by acclaimed Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki follows the story of a 10-year-old Chihiro (Rumi Hiiragi) and her parents (Takashi Naitô, Yasuko Sawaguchi). The family stumbles upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park and soon Chihiro’s parents turn into giant pigs. She meets a mysterious character named Haku (Miyu Irino) who explains that the park is a resort for supernatural beings who need a break from their time spent in the earthly realm. He convinces Chihiro that she must work there to free herself and her parents. Will she ever be able to set her parents free? That forms the story of the film.
The Tale of Princess Kaguya
The Tale of Princess Kaguya is the story of a princess and divine being who wishes to live a normal life. Princess Kaguya is discovered in a bamboo shoot by a bamboo cutter. She also brings a series of good fortune to her newly found family. When the family decides to make her a noble woman she disagrees and reveals her true origin, before the bamboo cutter finds her.
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Kiki’s Delivery Service is another masterpiece from director Hayao Miyazaki. Kiki is a young girl training to become a witch, who flies across the port city of Koriko on her broomstick. Soon, she sets up a flying courier service that, at first, does not go as well as she expected. When the insecure young witch begins questioning herself and loses her magic abilities, she needs to overcome her self-doubt to get her powers back.
Arrietty
To ensure sustenance for their families, a community of tiny beings called Borrowers, living under the floorboards of actual houses, “borrow” tiny amounts of goods and food from humans without them noticing. Like others of her kind, Arrietty remains hidden from her human hosts, but occasionally ventures forth from beneath the floorboards to borrow sugar cubes and other supplies. When 12-year-old Shawn meets Arrietty, they form a secret friendship. Their relationship could, however, spell danger for Arrietty's family.
Porco Rosso
A former World War I flying ace was somehow turned into a pig during the war. Later, in Italy in the 1930s, sky pirates in biplanes terrorize wealthy cruise ships as they sail the Adriatic Sea. The only pilot brave enough to stop the scourge is the mysterious Porco Rosso (Shuichiro Moriyama). As Porco Rosso prepares to battle the pirate crew, he enlists a girl mechanic named Fio Piccolo (Akemi Okamura) and his longtime friend Madame Gina (Tokiko Kato) for the mission.
