Subham marks the debut of Samantha Ruth Prabhu as a producer in Telugu cinema. She, along with Raj Nidimoru, co-produced the film on a very modest budget and turned it into a decent hit. Though the day-one numbers were alarming, Samantha sprang into action and promoted the film aggressively.
Now, the horror comedy is all set to stream on JioHotstar starting June 13, 2025. There’s strong buzz around the film, as not many got the chance to watch Subham in theatres. One of the main reasons for this was the lack of notable stars in the cast.
Sources close to the unit revealed that the makers had initially planned for a direct OTT release. However, they later changed their strategy and decided to try their luck with a theatrical release. Zee5 had originally bagged the OTT rights, but as the film opened to a disastrous start, the deal fell through. Samantha was left with no option but to approach JioCinema and secure a deal, reportedly for slightly less than what Zee5 had offered.
Fortunately, all the money invested was eventually recovered through theatrical collections, according to reports. Directed by Praveen Kandregula, who previously made the hit film Mail, Subham has been widely appreciated for its storytelling and execution.
The film revolves around women in a small town who become possessed while watching a TV series that airs daily at 9 PM. The mystery behind this strange phenomenon and its backstory form the crux of Subham.
Made on a budget of ₹10 crore, the film grossed nearly ₹20 crore at the box office. Its tone and setting are well-suited for OTT viewing, and it will be interesting to see how Subham performs when it premieres on JioHotstar on June 13, 2025.
With renewed energy, Ye Maaya Chesave and Theri star Samantha has announced her intention to produce more Telugu films and support emerging talent. Let’s wait and see what she brings to the table in the coming days.
