Subhash Ghai is known for some of the most iconic movies in Bollywood, including Pardes and Khalnayak. He was the filmmaker to look up to in the 80s and 90s. The filmmaker made a startling revelation about the Hindi film industry, in which he also revealed what made him quit films. Here's everything he said...

Subhash Ghai on quitting films

Filmmaker Subhash Ghai stopped making movies when he noticed that people's love for cinema was diminishing. While talking to Game Changers, he said, "I stopped making films because I don't see the love for cinema anymore - not in people, not even in my own team. They are all just working."

Deadline-driven industry shooed Subhash Ghai away from filmmaking

Recalling how he gave a writer an idea to develop a story, the filmmaker who has helmed iconic films like Khalnayak, Pardes and Taal (all available for streaming on OTTplay Premium), said that the writer promised to deliver the story within 15 days and deliver the first draft in three days. To top it up, the writer demanded his full fee upfront. This left the filmmaker frustrated.

WhatsApp and Email culture frustrates Subhash Ghai

In the very interview, Subhash Ghai expressed his frustration at the WhatsApp and Email culture. "They say you send me on email, that is enough. WhatsApp mein toh script aur dialogue likhe hai aaj kal," he said. With it, Ghai believes that the actors focus on financial gain rather than artistic merit, which has led to the industry being unable to produce any more superstars in the recent past. The filmmaker believes that the only actor who has come close to becoming a star after the Khans is Ranbir Kapoor.

Subhash Ghai is responsible for introducing Shahid Kapoor to the film industry. His movie Taal witnessed Shahid the backup dancer. The actor might have gained peak fame with his music video Aankhon Mein, but his appearance in the song Kahin Aag Lage Lag Jaaye featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was a moment that got him noticed years later. Shahid had further revealed that he actually got into a bike accident before the shoot and was flustered because he got to share the frame with Aishwarya. It is to be noted that Shahid and Aishwarya never paired up after Taal.
