Sugarless on OTT: Pruthvi Ambaar’s film on a young man with diabetes is now available to stream

Dia-star Pruthvi Ambaar’s solo release this year was Sugarless, a film in which he played a young man struggling with the fallout of becoming a Type 2 diabetes patient. The film was the directorial debut of Shashidhar KM, who, until then, had only served as producer in Kannada cinema. Pruthvi was paired with Priyanka Thimmesh in the film, which opened in theatres in early July. Back then, we’d told you that the digital partner of Sugarless is Voot Select and the film is now available to stream on the platform. Sugarless got its streaming date as part o Voot Select’s digital premiere this week. The film also stars Dattanna, S Narayan, Naveen D Padil, Dharmanna Kadur and Raghu Ramanakoppa among others.

Sugarless, according to Shashidhar, is a tale that’s novel for Kannada cinema and revolves around the struggles of the protagonist once he is diagnosed with diabetes. The film addresses questions such as ‘How can a relatively healthy 28-year-old-man have diabetes?’ as well as the related health issues one is likely to have owing to the condition. More importantly, it touches upon the stigma associated with the disease if it occurs at a young age, especially in terms of marriageability.

Ahead of the release of the film, Pruthvi had said, “Sugarless is my first film since Dia and the pandemic. I was in Mangaluru when Shashidhar sir narrated the script. I was impressed with the story, which is a first for Kannada cinema. I got to work with veteran actor Dattanna in this film; I was quite nervous about sharing screen space with him. He not only made me feel comfortable on set, but watching him was also a learning experience for me. The film might be called Sugarless, but there are a lot of sweet moments in it, be it in the romance, drama or comedy.”
