Interdisciplinary artiste Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee is known to host exhibitions to promote the indigenous art forms of Bengal. Now, the actor-orator will be hosting an exhibition incorporating master filmmaker Mrinal Sen’s work to celebrate his birth centenary this year.
Artist Shampa Mukherjee has curated six khadi silk dhotis as a tribute to six films by Sen and a set of table coasters with prints. This section shall also have T-shirts made by BongoStore and prints of posters of Sen's films, curated by painter Archee Roy. “If we bring Mrinal Sen into our everyday life, the younger generation will be aware of his work. Moreover, if we can bring Mrinal Sen’s work into our artwork, we will be enriched,” said Sujoy.
Mrinal Sen’s son Kunal Sen sent his wishes through a video message. In the video, he said that he wished he could attend the exhibition. “I would I could attend the exhibition because there are some items that are made in memory of my father. What is particularly intriguing is that these are fashion items and accessories and I find it extremely difficult to associate my father with any fashion item. He never cared about what he wore except for one fashion decision he made while shooting his film, Bhuvan Shom. He usually wore a white Kurta and loose pajamas. But in Kathiwadi he saw the men wearing some kind of tight pajamas and immediately fell in love with them. And from that point onwards that’s the only thing he wore. And that was not only in India but also in the cold places in the West where he visited,” he said in the video.
Sujoy has completed shooting Aranyak Chatterjee’s Nikhoj. He has worked as the stylist and acting trainer for Aritra Sen’s Shohorer Ushnotomo Dine which will be released in Summer. Meanwhile, he has started working with thespian Sohag Sen in her upcoming play.
