Malayalam actress Mamitha Baiju, who shot to fame with her role as Sona in Super Sharanya, will be making her Tamil debut with a Suriya-starrer, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Bala.
The film, which went on floors on Monday, also has Telugu actress Krithi Shetty in a pivotal role. Tentatively titled #Suriya41, the movie will have Mamitha in a rustic role. The team had shared a photo of the cast and crew from its first day of shoot.
It’s been a whirlwind past two years for the Malayalam actress who had played pivotal roles in movies such as Rajisha Vijayan’s Kho Kho and Girish AD’s Super Sharanya. Her role as Sharanya’s best friend Sona in the latter, which also has Anaswara Rajan and Arjun Ashokan as part of the cast, won her a fanbase, especially among the youth.
Mamitha was also part of Nahas Hidayath’s short film Colour Padam, which racked up almost 12 million views since its release on YouTube in November 2021. Bala’s directorial will mark her first Tamil film.
Meanwhile, #Suriya41 marks the first collaboration between Suriya and Bala in over 18 years. The duo had previously worked together in Pithamagan, which won Vikram the Best Actor award at the 2003 National Awards, as well as Nanda in 2001.
Suriya took to Twitter to share the joy of reuniting with the director for the movie, saying that he had been waiting for 18 years for his mentor Bala to say ‘action’. The rural drama went on floors on Monday, with the team shooting Kanyakumari.
The movie, produced by Suriya and Jyotika under their banner 2D Entertainments, has GV Prakash as its music director and Balasubramaniem as its cinematographer. Meanwhile, Suriya, whose previous release was Etharkkum Thunindhavan, will next be seen in a cameo role in the Tamil version of R Madhavan’s directorial, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.
