Rapper and music composer Chandan Shetty, who made his acting debut last year with Vidyarthi Vidyarthiniyare, a film that failed to create ripples at the box office, is back with his next, Suthradaari. Directed by debutant Kiran Kumar, and produced by Navarasan, a well-known distributor and film events organizer, Suthradaari is set to release in theatres on May 9. Suthradaari is, in a sense, a debut vehicle for Raana compos er Chandan, who is the protagonist of the investigative thriller.

Ahead of the film’s release, the trailer of Suthradaari was launched and gives audiences a peek into the tale, which revolves around the most mysterious case in the career of Chandan’s cop character and how he cracks the identity of the mastermind of the crime. Action Prince Dhruva Sarja, who is a close friend of Chandan and starred in Pogaru, whic h the rapper scored music for and features the viral hit Karabu, did the honours of releasing the trailer of Suthradaari.

Chandan Shetty: Thankful to the Sarja family for the opportunities

Speaking at the trailer launch, Chandan said that when he came to Bengaluru in 2010, it was the Sarja family that recognized the talent in him and gave him opportunities to work in films. Chandan had composed music for the late Chiranjeevi Sarja’s Seizer, which he then followed up with the blockbuster album of Pogaru. The film, incidentally, is Rashmika Mandanna's last in Kannada cinema.

The film has been censored U/A and features music by the leading man. Chandan had composed four songs for the film, but only three have made it to the final cut, as the team felt that including a fourth would affect the pacing and the thrill aspect of the subject. While they have not discarded the song, it will now only be used for promotional purpose. The film also stars Apurva, Sanjana Anand, Ganesh Narayan, Prashanth Natana, Meera Shree, Sushmitha, and Pallavi, among others.

During the trailer launch, producer Navarasan said that the film’s post-theatrical deals are yet to be figured out and that those depend on the theatrical business of Suthradaari. He also lamented the situation of Kannada audiences shunning theatres, which is a setback for him, as he has put multiple scripts on the backburner, given that there is no guarantee of returns from theatres.
