It has been three weeks since a junior doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Ever since the city has witnessed an unprecedented protest to demand justice for the deceased. On August 14, thousands of women took to the streets to host rallies at night. On September 1, the city witnessed yet another massive rally that was dotted with celebrities and common people alike.

The Sunday rally that started from College Street to Esplanade saw actresses including Aparna Sen, Swastika Mukherjee, Ditipriya Roy, Sudipta Chakraborty, Bidipta Chakraborty, Ushasie Chakraborty and others. Not just the women artistes, Srijit Mukherji, and others were also spotted at the rally. Sohini Sarkar was one of the key members of the rally. They sang Arijit Singh's protest song, Ar Kobe, at the rally.

Swastika, who was away from the city, told the media, “Everyone is protesting in their own way. We still don't know anything about the progress of the investigation. We don't know what CBI is doing. The government must be answerable. They must be answerable to the parents of the victim. It has almost been a month since this gruesome incident and yet we still don't have justice. Don't think people are fools to believe that one person, who has been apprehended and claimed to be the culprit, has orchestrated such an enormous event.”

Talking about the viral videos, she added, “We have been seeing many videos. We could see too many people around the dead body of the victim. As if, they were hosting a conference. There was no security. They even tried to pass it off as a suicide… As a common individual in this state, I will see what else needs to be done to wake the government up from its slumber.”

Ditipriya Roy seeks justice

Ditipriya, who marched the rally without an iota of celebrityhood, said, “If something like this happens to me what would my parents do? How long can they fight? I cannot think of anything else before getting justice. I cannot still fathom the amount of torture that the victim went through. I can't sleep.”
