Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye was announced in October 2022 as actress Ramya’s debut home production, as well as her return to cinema. A Raj B Shetty directorial, the film, though, had a change of cast soon enough, with Ramya opting out of playing the lead, a role that then went to Siri Ravikumar. The film was wrapped up in less than 20 minutes and, according to Raj, was best suited to be a direct-to-OTT release.

However, Ramya failed to find a streaming partner, something she alluded to at a media conclave when she spoke about mainstream platforms not picking Kannada content. After months of lying around, Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye eventually made it to theatres on November 24 and did not have a great run, although the reviews were largely positive, lauding Siri’s performance and the poetry of Raj’s writing. The film is now coming on OTT, having been picked by Amazon Prime Video. It will begin streaming on December 29.

Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye revolves around Prerana (Siri), a counsellor at a palliative care centre, who goes about the motions of reassuring her patients that all will be well as they prepare for the eventuality of life. Her marriage is also not going great. But then comes along a new patient, Aniketh (Raj) an end-stage cancer patient, whose take on life and companionship awakens the hitherto dormant and more resilient side to Prerana.

Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye has music by Raj’s regular collaborator Midhun Mukundan, while cinematography is by Praveen Shriyan. The film also stars Gopalkrishna Deshpande and Sandhya Arekere in pivotal cameos, both of who then had more prominent roles in his next, Toby, which dropped on OTT last week.
