We have completed one month into 2025, and February is here! Just like you, we also think this January has been the longest or rather felt the longest. This could also be because of how Tamil cinema failed to capitalize on its Pongal weekend, and barely released films that could engage with the audience, barring a few. Of course, we had Manikandan’s Kudumbasthan and Vishal-starrer Madha Gaja Raja becoming a surprise, but how has it really been to Tamil cinema this month? Let’s check out.

Tamil cinema box office report card of January 2025

For Tamil cinema, which faced a lull last year, Pongal 2025 was a perfect opportunity when it could have redeemed, and outshone with its festive releases. With the much-anticipated Vidaamuyarchi withdrawing itself from the Pongal race just on New Year’s Eve, many Tamil films jumped in to capitalize on the Pongal weekend.

Bala and Arun Vijay’s Vanangaan, Shane Nigam’s Madraskaaran, Nithya Menon and Jayam Ravi-starrer Kadhalikka Neramillai, director Vishnuvardhan’s Nesippaya, all hit theatres. But alas, who would have thought that a 12-year-old film would not only finally see the daylight but also become the surprise winner to resonate with the audience? Yes! Vishal and Sundar C’s film Madha Gaja Raja which was released in January, became the instant favourite for audiences who were starved of a good commercial entertainer. Close to collecting Rs 50 crore the film was recently released in Telugu as well, and is still running successfully.

Manikandan-starrer Kudumbasthan becomes family audiences’ sweetheart

Having removed Madha Gaja Raja off the list, Tamil cinema once again went to being dry, with no noteworthy film making a splash. But by the last week of January came Manikandan-starrer family drama Kudumbasthan, which became a box-office favorite.

With a young team, Kudumbasthan is going sturdy and has collected over Rs 13 crore so far. And more importantly, the film has been embraced by the audience, thanks to its healthy humor and brilliant performances from the cast. But apart from Madha Gaja Raja and Kudumbasthan, Tamil cinema has only been seeing extremely small releases that failed to make a mark.

Now that February is upon us, we will be seeing our first major star release with Ajith Kumar’s Vidaamuyarchi hitting screens on February 6. Hoping for the film to quench the thirst of our drabby box offices, February seems to have a greater number of notable releases than January, thanks to love being in the air! Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dragon, Dhanush directorial NEEK, and many more to enthrall us.
