It’s raining Kannada films across Karnataka, ever since the government allowed 100% capacity in movie halls. The latest to announce a date with audiences is producer-turned-director Gururaj Kulkarni’s directorial debut, Amruth Apartments, which has zeroed in on October 26 for its release. Written by Gururaj, who had earlier served as producer on the SD Arvinda-directed Last Bus, Amruth Apartments is a thriller that follows a once-much-in-love mixed-couple – he (Tarak Ponnappa) a Kannadiga, she (Urvashi Goverdhan) a Bengali – who, while no the brink of separation, witness a crime. The narrative follows the investigation into the incident and the effect it has on the couple.

“I wrote this story based on my understanding of modern-day relationships. It is, no doubt, a fictional account, but the events in the narrative will be relatable to most people. For instance, there is a reason people say love is blind, because those in love tend to overlook certain aspects of the partner. In our story, Tarak’s character voices his disapproval to non-vegetarian items being cooked in the house only after they are married and have invested time and money on their relationship. Similarly, she too finds out that he has traits that she can’t digest. But just as they contemplate separation, they witness a crime. How their relationship evolves during the course of the investigation forms the crux of the narrative,” says Gururaj, adding that Bengaluru’s apartment culture is a major element of the storyline.

The film, which Gururaj has produced as well, was shot in Bengaluru, in about 60 days. Apart from Tarak and Urvashi, the film also has Manasa Joshi as the Commissioner of Police, Seetha Kote as an advocate, as well as Balaji Manohar and Sampath Kumar in undisclosed, but pivotal roles. SD Arvinda’s association with Gururaj continues with this film too, with the former filling in as music director.
