Huma Qureshi is all set to portray the life and legacy of Tarla Dalal, the celebrated chef, cookbook author and television host, in a biopic titled 'Tarla'. The film, directed by debutant Piyush Gupta and co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari, started streaming on ZEE5 from July 7.

In a recent exclusive interview with OTTplay, Huma Qureshi discussed her role in the movie, carrying the entire film on her shoulders, and much more. 

When asked if playing a real-life character could be challenging and also carrying the whole film on her shoulders, was there any pressure because of this? The actress said, “I don’t believe that, I mean, I could be the face of it but I don’t think I’m carrying the film on my shoulders. I have all these amazing people and a very amazing team behind it that made it happen. Kehte hai na vo kahaani ek aurat ki ho but it takes a village to tell that story.” 

When it was mentioned that houses still had a rule that required women to do more cooking than men, Huma was quick to respond, “I think ye rule hone chahiye that you can only eat if you know how to cook.” 

Further talking about people criticising women on the basis of their weight, the Double XL actress said, “Logo ka mindset badalne ke liye aap hamesha actors nahi ban sakte, aapko apni life bhi jeeni hoti hai. Aur aapko bas kaam karna hota hai.”

Meanwhile, Tarla shows Huma Qureshi transforming the legendary home cook who revolutionised Indian cuisine and won the hearts of millions. The film traces Tarla Dalal's journey from an adrift homemaker to a renowned food writer and chef who popularized distinctly Indian (and vegetarian) dishes like 'batata musallam' among her admirers.

Tarla Dalal was a Padma Shri-awardee who passed away in 2013 following a cardiac arrest. She is credited for simplifying Indian cuisines like Gujarati and Punjabi food and enjoyed a huge following overseas.
