Tarun Majumdar: Debashree Roy conducts the last rites of her guru

Tarun Majumdar wished that his daughter-like actress Mousumi Chatterjee, Mahua Raychowdhury, or Debashree Roy to carry out his last rites since he had no children. Mohua passed away in 1985. As per his wish, Debashree conducted his rites on Friday, four days after the death of the filmmaker.

In an interview with Anandabazar Online, the actress said that she was suffering from fever as she took a cold bath after hearing the news of Tarun Majumdar’s death. She also added that Tarun Majumdar was a father figure to her and her prayers and conducting last rites would be her tribute, guru Dakshina, to her guru.

Meanwhile, she also informed that Tarun Majumdar’s sister conducted a ritual at her Kolkata residence on Thursday. Besides Debashree, she invited the filmmaker’s wife Sandhya Roy, and Ayan Bandyopadhyay – the actor who debuted in Tarun Majumdar’s Shriman Prithviraj. However, Debashree could not attend the prayer because of her health issues. In fact, Sandhya Roy too had to give it a miss. Ayan attended the ritual.

On Friday, Debashree conducted the puja at Dakat Kali Temple right next to her Purnadas Roy Road residence. Ayan attended the Puja with her. Before the rites rituals, she said that this temple remains empty and the Puja would take place in peace. “We were his children. We pray that his soul rests in peace,” the actress said.

Tarun Majumdar breathed his last on July 4 after being admitted to a Kolkata hospital for days. He was 93. He was considered to be the last of the doyens after Satyajit Ray, Rittick Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and others in the Bengali film industry. Some of his classics include Dadar Kirti, Alo, Shriman Prithviraj, and so on. He married Sandhya Roy in the ’60s however, they parted ways later.
