Thalapathy Vijay's latest movie Leo has shocked the trade with its excellent performance at the box office. While the movie was expected to perform well considering its massive pre-release hype, nobody expected it to take the global box office by storm.

What has befuddled the trade experts is that Leo has continued to dominate the box office despite mixed reviews that it garnered following its release.

Leo has shattered many box office records since its release. For one, it became the first ever film in the history of the Tamil film industry to collect more than Rs 148 crore on its opening day. The movie went on to draw massive crowds to theatres across the country despite challenges from other new releases during the Vijayadashami holidays.

At the Tamil Nadu box office, Leo made a terrific debut by grossing over Rs 35 crore. And it became Vijay's biggest opener in the state, following Beast (Rs 35 crore) and Sarkar (Rs 31 crore plus).

Within the first six days of its release, Leo became Vijay's biggest grosser in the state. As per the trade sources, the movie has sold over Rs 150 crore worth of tickets in Tamil Nadu alone during the six-day extended holiday weekend. It is also the first movie in the state's box office history to earn Rs 20 crore plus for six consecutive days since its release.

If Leo continues its bullish run even in its second weekend, the film might set a new box office benchmark in Tamil Nadu. Now, director Mani Ratnam's epic drama Ponniyin Selvan 2 holds the top spot with a collection of Rs 200 crore in Tamil Nadu.

As Leo completes one week in cinemas on Thursday, the producers are expected to share the movie's total global collection. According to several reports, Leo has earned Rs 500 crore from its worldwide ticket sales, achieving break-even in many territories already.
