Nothing at the moment is more important than what everyone is wearing, doing, and rejoicing at the pre-wedding festivities of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in Jamnagar, Gujarat. We are busy keeping track of everything happening at the venue while we eat chips on our couch in our pyjamas. The event is surely one of its kind, and the intensity lies in the word pre-wedding because this is not even remotely a part of the main event, which is in July 2024. So now that we are already feeling dizzy reading more and more details about the gala, we certainly need a break because, while it is the second day, there is also the third and final day waiting for us.

Since are already busy covering real-life weddings, some for salary and others for free, why not relive some very interesting Bollywood movies that have weddings as the main theme of the movie? Weddings as a subject have always found a very vibrant space in Indian cinema. The surroundings might be dark, worrisome, serious, or joyous, but the core is always beautiful because the setup screams vibrancy. Movies over the years have seen filmmakers experiment with the genre and have stories that have left us surprised.

So today, as we continue obsessing over Anant and Radhika’s pre-wedding festivities, let’s take a break and revisit a movie or maybe a couple of them. The range is literally from Sooraj Barjatya to Vishal Bhardwaj and even Anand L Rai in the mix. Read on and get on the bus.

Hum Saath Saath Hain

Cast: Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Mohnish Bahl, Sonali Bendre, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, ensemble.

Streaming on: Netflix, Prime Video, and ZEE5.

Let’s be generous to our senses to begin with because they have been surprised a lot in the past two days. We have seen Rihanna dance to Zingaat; let’s not pressure our minds and hearts more than that. So here is the first movie, which is a little movie about many weddings. Hum Saath Saath Hain will always be iconic, and there can never be a replacement because it is a guilty pleasure for crores of Indians and a blueprint for most of our weddings. The song, dance and sanskar are represented at their peak in this one.

Tanu Weds Manu

Cast: Kangana Ranaut, R Madhavan, Jimmy Shergill, and ensemble.

Streaming on: Eros Now and YouTube (on rent).

Okay, let’s now have some unconventional options on the list. While you do not want to live in a dilemma around your wedding like Tanu, you certainly cannot deny the scale at which she is getting married. Anand L Rai creates the most vibrant worlds in general, and when there is a wedding in his frame that is already colourful, you know the man will show you a fairy tale. Tanu Weds Manu is a brilliant movie with a very interesting wedding, and you must watch it.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania

Cast: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Shukla, and ensemble.

Streaming on: Netflix and Prime Video.

What better than a modern-day love story of hopelessly romantic people who are also busy quarrelling the roadblocks from yesteryear like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaaenge? Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is a fun film that tells you a romantic tale that you already know is leading towards a very grand wedding. This one is for all those who want to watch a simple entertainer with not much to invest.

7 Khoon Maaf

Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Irrfan Khan, John Abraham, and ensemble.

Streaming on: Netflix.

There are 6 weddings in this one (for the 7th, you will have to watch the film). How do you think we would not have this one on the list? Starring Priyanka Chopra, 7 Khoon Maaf, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, is a misfit if you are looking for an ideal wedding, but if you want a detour while sticking to the genre, this one is a perfect substitute. If you haven’t given this film a chance, you must right now.

Vivah

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao, and ensemble.

Streaming on: Prime Video and Zee5.

We all know every single dialogue from this movie, and we will still watch it every single time. This is the prototype of a good shaadi, and none of us are going to have it this way. Vivah, for many of us, is a guilty pleasure and a comfort watch, and what better time than this to watch it.
