Fans were pleasantly surprised by the recent episode of The Boys Season 3. The growing relationship between Butcher and Maeve in season 3 left them awestruck. The showrunner Eric Kripke recently opened up about the sex scene between the new couple.
The Amazon Prime Video series The Boys, which is currently in Season 3, is based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series of the same name. The show follows Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), and the vigilante group who fight corrupt superheroes. Season 2 of the show ended with Queen Maeve/Maggie Shaw (Dominique McElligott) blackmailing Homelander into leaving Butcher and his team alone. It was a satirical take on Superman.
In Season 3, the episodes of which are being released on a weekly basis, it was revealed that Maeve and Butcher have actually been working together to kill Homelander. Maeve manages to give Butcher three vials of Temp-V or V-24, levelling the playing field by giving its user powers for 24 hours. But all in vain. Maeve gets more V-24 to Butcher and feeling dejected and defeated, the two get drunk and have sex, which left everyone shocked. That was not what viewers had expected coming.
According to Screenrant, Kripke told TVLine that the makers got an idea for the hookup scene from the 2001 movie, Monster’s Ball. The film had a scene where Billy Bob Thorton and Halle Berry’s characters hook up amid their grief. “The writers talked about that moment as desperate and a little grimy. We talked about Monster’s Ball when Billy Bob Thorton and Halle Berry hook up and it’s just so grimy because they’re both mourning deaths," he said, adding that the two share lot of common things, be it their hatred for Homelander, hatred for superheroes in general and how they feel so 'f**ked'.
The makers were also inspired by the sex scene between Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange in The Postman Always Rings Twice. Maeve was trapped when Homelander sniffed Butcher's scent on her, leading to her kidnapping by Black Noir. Starlight came to believe that Maeve was dead but Ashley made up a story that she is been to a wellness center. Speaking further about what to expect, Kripke kind of confirmed that the Boys' Wonder Woman is alive but in 'a tight spot'.
Now, it would be interesting to watch how things unfold further in the upcoming episodes of the show. The romantic night between the two seems to have been added to move the plotline ahead with Homelander.
