Emma Watson and Nathan Fielder are starring in Paramount+’s latest misé en abyme, The Curse. Focused on the brand-new art of ‘flipanthropy,’ the series follows the characters of Whitney Siegel, daughter of wealthy slumlords (portrayed by Corbin Bernsen and Constance Shulman), and her husband Asher, as the two attempt to gentrify the town of Española and launch a successful HGTV show.
The cast comprises of Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder, Benny Safdie, Corbin Bernsen, Constance Shulman, Hikmah Warsame, Dahabo Ahmed, Barkhad Abdi, Gary Farmer, and Christopher Calderon. The show was initially planned to be a 30-minute comedy, but then it became an hour-long drama with moments of intense drama, modern horror, and dark comedy.
The ten-episode long ordeal is a curdled souffle served on a plate of hypocrisy, with a wonderfully stable sauce on the side, the chef is satire. It is as mesmerizing as it is revolting, showing the dark underbelly of reality television and pretended philanthropy, for the sake of tax returns and compliments.
The couple, Whitney and Asher, are privileged, white self-proclaimed do-gooders, who are in the town of Española to flip and sell their promises, aka chiefly houses and real estate, to make a pretty penny. But they are not as sleazy as their HGTV-show head, Dougie.
They are woke, liberal, educated individuals who knows their ‘privilege’ from ‘exploitation of minorities.’ And that’s where the horror lies. All their knowledge combined could not prevent Asher from incurring a curse from a local girl, all because of his showing off and being cheap.
What proceeds henceforth, is the couple’s gentle descent into discord, chaos, bad luck, and decay, amidst a set of awkward, amusing, horrifying, and pretensive incidents. The show has premiered its pilot on Paramount+ on November 10, and its subsequent episodes will be aired weekly on Fridays.
