The Empire: Kunal Kapoor looks majestic as Emperor Babur in Disney+ Hotstar series

In a teaser of the upcoming historical series The Empire, streaming service Disney + Hotstar revealed the first look of its lead Kunal Kapoor as Emperor Babur.

Created by filmmaker Nikkhil Advani, The Empire is a series about the Mughal Empire and focuses on the story of Babur, the dynasty’s first emperor.

The teaser shows Kunal donned in regal warrior attire with a sword at his side. It ends with him gazing intensely at the camera.

When talking about the show in a virtual press conference Kunal Kapoor has stated that it will be a “spectacle”, the kind of which has never been seen on any platform in the country before. The Don 2 actor, who said he has not been part of a project of such a big scale before, also shared that it was difficult to film it amid the pandemic.

In addition to Kapoor, the film also stars Drashti Dhami and Shabana Azmi. Azmi talked about what intrigued her about her character of Esan Daulat, whom she referred to as educated and feisty.

The National Film Award-winning actress has also weighed in her thoughts about OTT platforms during the virtual event, saying that unlike watching a film in the theatre, viewers always have the choice to stop watching whenever they feel like they are losing interest. The Empire will mark the digital debuts of both Kapoor and Azmi.

The show is to be produced by Madhu Bhojwani and Monisha Advani through their production company Emmay Entertainment. Mitakshara Kumar will be directing it.
