Robert Rodriguez has become one of the most celebrated filmmakers over the years thanks to his unique filmmaking style and signature visual aesthetics. Some of his biggest hits such as The Mexico trilogy, Planet Terror, Spy Kids, Sin City, and From Dusk Till Dawn have earned widespread acclaim over the years. But one might even argue that these titles are cult classics. However, if there is a film that truly deserves cult status from Rodriguez’s filmography is the lesser-known 90s sci-fi horror film, The Faculty.

Set in a public high school in Ohio, the plot revolves around a gang of misfits who shockingly discover that the school’s faculty have somehow become mind-controlled by parasitic aliens and that aliens plan to take over the entire town and beyond. The school’s notorious bad boy and drug dealer stumble onto the fact that his home-cooked ecstasy drugs can kill the parasite. But the students face the daunting task of identifying the ones they can trust and possibly find the Queen parasite to save their teachers, friends, and the rest of the town.

Even though the film was panned upon release, critics have since regarded it as one of Rodriguez's best works. The film’s subtext of teenage alienation and its exploration of the high-school environment as a microcosm of 90s America has become the subject of study and analysis over the years.

The film features an ensemble cast of Josh Hartnett, Jon Stewart, Famke Janssen, Jordana Brewster, Piper Laurie, Christopher McDonald, Robert Patrick, Elijah Wood, and Salma Hayek among others.

The Faculty is streaming on Apple TV.
