When it comes to actor Shraddha Srinath, she may be someone who is known for acting in certain types of characters that are rooted to reality and real-life casualness that comes with meeting people on a daily basis. Her Witness, Jersey, and Nerkonda Paarvai. But that did not make her shy away from taking up the reins of commercial cinema through flicks like Vikram Vedha and Daaku Maharaj. And in going back to what she does the best, trying out something new, Shraddha makes her long-format OTT debut with Netflix series The Game helmed by Rajesh M Selva. So, what was it to finally take the plunge into a new medium of acting?
“I am also someone who chooses certain kind of films or like my performances are on the realistic side of spectrum. So, it did not feel very different,” says Shraddha in conversation with OTTplay.
In The Game, Shraddha plays the role of Kavya, a game developer, an independent woman and wife, and more so, a woman who fights patriarchy and misogyny in every day of life. Speaking of her character, Shraddha says, “Kavya is a role model to me. Apparently, according to Rajesh sir, I tend to exhibit some qualities of Kavya. But the funny thing is that we never appreciate our moments of strength. We may speak our mind or set our boundaries, navigate situations very practically, but it was interesting for me to play Kavya. She is dealing a lot, and even the games she is developing, like Glass Ceiling, are suggestive of breaking the glass ceiling or smashing the patriarchy. I loved such little things about Kavya.”

But how much of Kavya is really Shraddha, whose off-screen personality too has enough material to prove herself. As someone who broke into the industry all by herself, and garnered a sensible filmography, etching her own path, the actor says, “There is a lot of Kavya I wish to be, and more that I do not want to be either. She can be a little too reckless but also brave in a way that’s inspiring.”
With The Game, Shraddha plays her character a little longer than films have made her too. But as someone who has a background in theatre, Shraddha talks about the gradual decrease in theatrics that stage plays, theatrical releases and OTT series exhibit.
“With OTT, you do get to play around with more realism. The audience who come to theatres, are used to a certain kind of performance, and how certain things sell. So, there is a particular way that gets stuck to it, but whereas on OTT, you can really milk your character, explore more. There are avenues because it's a longer format. You are not rushing through the character but living through and breaking down every beat of it,” Shraddha explains.

Back to speaking about The Game, Shraddha is all praise about all the female energy that comes off from the characters that come during the show. Be it inspector Banumathi or her colleague Anne, The Game radiates female energy, and Shraddha is all up for such instances. “I love all the female characters in the series, like everyone is going through something. Some of the men I have met are most progressive, and some women are conditioned to be misogynistic. So, it has worked out beautifully how these characters in the series meet beautifully. Any other characters would have broken the flow of the story.”
The Game streams on Netflix from October 2 onwards. All seven episodes of the thriller are available to watch. Directed by Rajesh M Selva, the series also stars Santhosh Pratap, Chandini, Syama Harini, Bala Hasan, Subash Selvam, Viviya Santh, Dheeraj, and Hema. The series marks Netflix’s first Tamil original series this year.
