In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, actor Rashmika Mandanna spoke about her latest acting stint, as Bhooma in Telugu relationship drama The Girlfriend. She talked about how the role made her feel more as an actor than a heroine, given Rashmika Mandanna has starred alongside tentpole films across languages.

“Till now, I had something to prove. I came here to be an actor but when they used to say that she is being part of big spectacle films and she does not have much to contribute, it used to bother me. But somehow playing Bhooma Devi in The Girlfriend, gave me some peace in heart and mind that I can be purely an actor, not just being a heroine. That calmed by heart and I want to do quality work over quantity work,” Rashmika Mandanna said. Having starred in five films this year alone, including Chhaava, Sikandar, Kuberaa, Thamma and The Girlfriend, the actor said she will be now concentrating on doing 2-3 films a year.

The Girlfriend is set to release on Netflix on December 5. Written and directed by Rahul Ravindran, the film also stars Dheekshith Shetty, Anu Emmanual, Rohini, Rao Ramesh and others in supporting characters. The film revolves around a young woman who joins post-graduate program and gets into a toxic relationship with a boyfriend who is not only manipulative and controlling but also narcissistic and self-centred. The Girlfriend opened to good reviews from critics, praising Rashmika Mandanna’s performance. It is also to be noted that The Girlfriend is the first film that Rashmika headlined solely.
