The Impossible Heir Story

Disney+ Hotstar’s latest K-drama, The Impossible Heir, premiered on February 28 with an action-packed opening scene. The first episode, titled Fate, is about the coming-of-age of three underdogs, Han Tae Oh, Kang In-ha, and Na Hye Won. Each of the main characters has a troubled past and strives to turn their fate around. Beginning with a gory and bloody crime scene, the drama quickly goes to flashbacks and introduces us to the characters. Han Tae-oh arrives at his mother’s hometown to begin a new journey and meets the illegitimate third son of an affluent Chaebol family of the Kangoh Group.

The high schoolers have a rocky start but slowly bond over their shared disgrace throughout their childhood (one is a murderer’s son, the other an illegitimate son). Their unlikely friendship or partnership gets deeper when they join Hankuk University together and have a chance encounter with the third lead, Na Hye-won, who attends the same college.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger when Ne Hye-won lands a new deal with Tae-oh, which might change their relationship dynamics.

The Impossible Heir Review

The pilot episode of The Impossible Heir is a captivating watch as it features a well-executed narrative and a thrilling introduction to each character and their tactics. Han Tae-oh's smarts make him in the 0.1 percent of highly intelligent people, while Inha’s impressive family status makes him the golden goose for people around him. Episode 1 gives a glimpse into the unlikely friendship of the two characters, which began with a school fight and the principal’s office apology for supporting and celebrating one another.

Apart from several thrills, the makers have successfully captured the attention of viewers by adding violence in the opening scene, where one of the lead’s (Han Tae-oh) is grabbing a knife with several dead bodies scattered on the floor.

The use of a multi-linear timeline piques the curiosity of viewers as it delves into the backstories of its characters. Several hard-hitting childhood flashbacks also play a key role in framing the true motives of Han Tae-Oh and Hye-won. The initial story also sets the tone for the upcoming power struggle as the childhood besties lay out a meticulous plan to break into the conglomerate and avenge the wrongdoings.

Impossible Heir also showcases the evident love triangle between three self-centered characters who will not hesitate to trade their feelings for success and ulterior motives. Overall, the first episode was character-driven and did not compromise on the revenge plot.
