Just over a month after The Irregulars debuted on Netflix, the Holmesian series has been cancelled by the streaming giants. The first season of The Irregulars premiered on March 26.

Eight episodes of this series were set in 19th century London, at the peak of the Victorian era. The plot follows a group of teenagers who don't quite fit the mould of sophisticated Londoners. This gang of misfits ends up solving crimes for Doctor Watson who is covertly putting them up to do Sherlock Holmes’ work. The five Irregulars encounter paranormal phenomena, magic and dark powers on their quests to find answers and ultimately are faced with a situation where they must save London.

The news of the cancellation has been called expected by some and shocking by others. The viewership of the series was divided into two distinct categories - some loved in and some couldn’t get past the first episode. Irrespective of that, The Irregulars was the number one streaming show the week it debuted and over 643 million minutes were streamed from across all episodes.

The series received mixed reviews from critics, but most audiences seem to have enjoyed a fresh take on the Holmesian world, with the series holding a 78% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A reimagination of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Baker Street Irregulars, the series was directed by Tom Bidwell and stars Thaddea Graham, Darci Shaw, Royce Pierreson, Harrison Osterfield and McKell David.

Netflix has not released any official explanation as to why the show will not be renewed for a second season.
