Festival releases are always a big deal and this week, there are multiple films making their way to audiences, either in theatres or on OTT. It’s the auspicious occasion of Varamahalakshmi this week and in Karnataka, the big release is, no doubt, Raj B Shetty’s Toby. In a city like Bengaluru, for instance, the film may have some competition from the Onam releases in Malayalam, like Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha, for instance. This, however, is not being dubbed in Kannada.

Last month’s big theatrical success story, Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare, was meant to be on OTT this week, but the film’s Telugu dubbed version is releasing in theatres this week, so the streaming date has been postponed for the time being. Ajit Jayaraj’s film on freedom fighter Bhagath Singh was also rumoured to be in theatres this week, but the film, we hear, is still in post-production.

Toby

Directed by Basil AL Chalakkal, Toby has been written by Raj B Shetty based on a story by Dayanand TK, in which the actor-filmmaker is playing the title role. Set in Kumta, Toby has been described as a revenge drama and boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Samyukta Hornad , Chaithra J Achar, Bharath GB, among others. The film is the major theatrical release of the week for the festival. Presented by KVN Productions, it will first release in Kannada, with dubbed versions to be decided on at a later stage.

Bayaluseeme

Samyukta Hornad’s second release on August 25 is the socio-political drama Bayaluseeme. Written and directed by lead actor Varun Kattimani, the film also stars Archana Kottige, P Ravishankar, TS Nagabharana, Yash Shetty, among others.

Aachar & Co

Actress Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy’s debut directorial was a tale set in 60s Bengaluru, when gender roles began to shift, with women taking a more prominent part in the running of a household, including seeking better education and employment opportunities. Produced by PRK Productions, and among the last few projects greenlit by the late Power Star, Aachar & Co released in theatres and had a decent run at the box office.
