Amidst the ongoing controversy encircling around the film The Kerala Story, India’s apex court today agreed to list, on May 15, a plea challenging the Kerala High Court order refusing to stay the release of the film, which hit theatres on May 5.

The plea, as reported by news portal LiveLaw, was mentioned by senior advocate and politician, Kapil Sibal before a bench comprising Chief Justic of India DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha.

"This is pertaining to the Kerala story. This has some sort of urgency. The High Court has passed the order, they've refused the interim stay," read the plea.

Earlier, on May 5, the Kerala High Court refused to stay the film as they believed that “there was nothing offensive to any particular community in it”. The bench also noted that the film has been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and that “none of the petitioners had watched the film and that the producers had added a disclaimer that the film was a fictionalized version of events”.

For those unaware, The Kerala Story is a film about a group of women from Kerala who were allegedly forcefully converted to Islam and made to join a terrorist organization. However, this plotline has not dwelled down well by a certain sect of the society who claim that it is hampering the religious harmony in the country.

Meanwhile, the lead actress of the film Adah Sharma has expressed her gratitude towards those supporting the film. She tweeted on May 6, “Standing ovation in theatres... critics and audience applauding my performance, HOUSEFULL messages from so many of you, bumper opening! I could never have dreamed of so much. All your dreams for me are coming true #Greatful” The film is helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
