The animated prequel, which is overseen by director Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), takes place around two hundred years before Peter Jackson's acclaimed The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy. The plot centres on Brian Cox's (watch Pixels) ferocious portrayal of Rohan's King Helm Hammerhand, whose careless moves set in motion a terrible conflict with the Dunlendings. In the epic last struggle at the castle of Hornburg, subsequently called Helm's Deep, his daughter Héra, played by the talented Gaia Wise, is a defiant and cunning fighter who becomes an indispensable ally to her people.
The film's narrator, the legendary Éowyn from Jackson's trilogy, Miranda Otto, returns for a second time. In addition to Lorraine Ashbourne as Olwyn and Luke Pasqualino (watch Skins) as Wulf, the voice actor also includes Laurence Ubong Williams as Fréaláf Hildeson.
Based on the annals of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings books, The War of the Rohirrim is an animated feature produced by Warner Bros. and Sola Entertainment in collaboration with New Line Cinema and WingNut Films that reveals more about the mythical king of Rohan and his unrecorded past. The animation, drawing inspiration from classic anime and Peter Jackson's visual language, marks this unusual stylistic transition for the franchise.
On a $30 million budget, the film grossed $20.5 million worldwide upon its December 2024 theatrical release, which was met with poor reviews and a lacklustre showing at the box office. But its anime style, character-driven storyline, and world building have made it a cult favourite.
Watching The War of the Rohirrim for the first time on JioHotstar will give Indian viewers a new and touching way to immerse themselves in the enduring legends of Middle-earth.
JioHotstar will begin streaming the film on May 13. Additionally, you may rent it on Prime Video.
